Growing up, my Mom and Dad made a point that our immediate family of four sit down for family dinner every night. Often times, we'd have extended family dinners with Gram, Aunt Julie, Uncle John, Alex and William - just because. We didn't need a holiday to eat together.
While I didn't realize it at the time, I think it's these moments in my life that have tied family and food so closely together for me.
I have a special interest in my Jewish heritage. Reading through Gram's well-loved but vague cooking notes, researching the family tree, and asking the women in our family a million food questions at family dinners never ceases to entertain me.
I lost my Grandma a few years ago, and learning about our family and trying to document unwritten memories and food traditions has been a way for me to cope with losing her. It's strange, but I feel like digging to uncover undocumented memories and familiar foods that make us a family makes me closer to her.
There is a special place in my heart for red spaghetti, sweet kugel, latkes, and brisket. And for the rest of my life, I will always make a meatloaf with an egg in the middle - just like Mom.
I could spend days upon days reading cookbooks, and I especially love baking. Food Pearl is a place where I compile my thoughts, inspiration, family traditions and experiments for cooking with mostly fresh, whole foods.
Happy reading and thanks for stopping by.
